Chris decorated our house this past week with some of Ali’s & Andrew’s Thanksgiving projects from grade school.  It’s so fun to see these again.  Here are a few snippets from some of Andrew’s writings.

Andrew (7 yrs old) — “What are you thankful for?”

  • family
  • turkey
  • money :)
  • home
  • food
  • Pokemon
  • teachers (he’s no dummy :)
  • life
  • Pilgrims :)

Andrew (8yrs old) “To Mom & Dad.  Thank you for:

  • Thank you for raising me.  You did a great job.  You are the best.  I love you.  Love, Andrew McDonough”

I love you, too, Andrew.  It was my tremendous honor to raise you!  Please help to raise us the rest of the way.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and cherished the time with your loved ones.

Ali’s Thanksgiving message from last year was so beautiful that I thought  I’d simply re-print it.  Enjoy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To all our  friends:
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, please realize how thankful we are to all of you for your support. We appreciate you being there for us…in the good and difficult times.
As you celebrate Thanksgiving, however it may be, please take a minute to look around you and take 5 minutes, even, to just realize how lucky you are. If you can see what’s around you, be thankful. If you have food on the table, be thankful. If you’re with family, be thankful. Even though we don’t have Andrew here with us, physically, he’s with us. I realize that I am so lucky to have had 14 amazing years with our boy. I’m so thankful. Obviously I wish he was still here physically, but he’ll always be with us.
This Thanksgiving, please keep in your thoughts and prayers all the families who have had children go to Heaven before them, all the children around the world who are suffering, and their families.
B+ , Be Thankful, and FROG.
- Ali
I would also like to ask for prayers for Justin Hankins.  Justin accidentally swallowed a thumb tack which required what one would imagine would be a somewhat routine endoscopy.  Unfortunately, severe complications arose and Justin suffered an anoxic brain injury.   It’s just hard to believe.  Please visit Justin’s site and offer your support for Justin and his family.  Thanks!
Last week, I wrote about the Alpha Omega Epsilon/B+ Fundraiser at Grotto Pizza in Newark on Thurs. Dec. 4th.  Please visit www.BePositive.org (under the heading “Join Us for Fun and Help B+”) and you can print out the coupon.  This coupon needs to be presented when you’re dining there on the 4th for the Foundation to receive our 20% of the order.  Thanks so much!  You’re going to want a break from turkey leftovers by then!
Enjoy the very interesting quote from Maya Angelou…
“I’ve learned that making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as ‘making a life’.”
Andrew, Happy Thanksgiving Buddy!  No days, holidays or otherwise, are ever the same without you!  May God bless us all.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I met a great family at A.I. that needs your prayers.  I really feel for them.  Two + weeks ago, their lives were ‘normal’ and they were planning a trip to Longwood Gardens.  Today, they are ‘residents’ of A.I. DuPont hospital trying to figure out the best course of treatment for their 4 year old son who had a brain tumor removed.  The brave young man’s name is Drew Koenig  (I have to admit, he’s got to be a great kid if he’s named Andrew!!!  :))   PLEASE visit Drew’s website and leave him a message of encouragement.  Let them know the power of the B+ community.  Thanks so much.
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/drewkoenig
I’d like say a special thank you to Andy Quesenberry (Pearce’s Dad) for visiting with the Koenigs.  We’ve got to stick together to get through all of this.  Andy, you’re a great guy!  (Pearce’s site is ”Pearcerock” on CarePages.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chris and I spent yesterday with Ali at the Delaware football game.  Whew…how the weather sure has changed!  :)  It was fun hanging out with Ali — even if the game wasn’t very good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kudos to Brendan Warrington of West Chester, PA.  Brendan recently celebrated his 12th birthday and, in lieu of gifts, asked for donations to The B+ Foundation.  Brendan raised $200!!!  We’re proud of you, Brendan!  Thank you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I would like to express my condolences to all of the friends and family of Bob Bacchieri.  Bob left this world this past week at the age of 46.  I was privileged to have known Bob for a brief time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Folks, please don’t get stressed out this week over Thanksgiving Day preparations.  It will all work out fine.  We blessed in so many ways.
God bless you.
For the last 14 months, we’ve owed a response to the videographer who shot the footage of the Visitation on July 20, 2007 and the “Celebration of Andrew’s Life” on July 21, 2007.  He gave us a ‘rough cut’ and wanted our input.  As rude as I felt about not getting back to him, we just couldn’t stomach watching yet.  Well, on Tuesday night, we finally watched the video.  It was, understandably, very hard.  It just didn’t feel real.  I can’t appropriately describe the feeling.  In some ways, it felt like July 21, 2007 again.  In some ways, I felt that I watching a movie about someone else.  I guess that’s some sort of defense mechanism.  I don’t know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We’re blessed with great support from the community that I want to pass along to you.  I hope you’ll be able to join us for these events.

“An A+ Auction for the B+ Foundation”

Clever name, huh!  (I certainly didn’t come up with it!)  A group of freshmen at the University of Delaware are holding a fundraiser for the B+ Foundation.  There will be food, a DJ, possibly live music, and get this — a ‘date auction’!!!  This should be a fun night.  The event will be held on Dec. 1st at 7:30 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Trabant Student Center.  Guys, thank you so much for thinking of us and ‘our kids’.

Alpha Omega Epsilon (Univ of DE) Fundraiser

I was so pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Carolyn, the President of Alpha Omega Epsilon at the University of Delaware.  They have decided to do a fundraiser for the B+ Foundation at Grotto Pizza in Newark.  A portion of the proceeds are donated to us if you present the coupon.  We will put the coupon online so that you can download it.  Please plan on joining us in Newark on Dec. 4th.  Thank you, Carolyn, and all of the ladies of Alpha Omega Epsilon.

What: Andrew McDonough’s B+ Foundation Fundraiser

When: Thursday, December 4th, 2008.  4-9pm

Where: Grotto Pizza, Main St, Newark Delaware

B+ Foundation Day at Sweet Lucy’s on Dec. 12th

Sweet Lucy’s, the great ice cream parlor on Concord Pike in Wilmington, will be hosting a B+ Foundation fundraiser on Friday, Dec. 12th.  A portion of the proceeds from all sales will go to our Foundation.   Sweet Lucy’s is open from 2:00-10:00.  I know what you’re thinking - it’s Dec.  Come on!  Ice cream is ice cream… you don’t eat it in Dec???  It’s one of my biggest vices…I could eat it every single day of the year.  Please come out and join us.  Have some delicious ice cream and help a good cause.  Thank you, Ted Bracken of “Sweet Lucy’s”.

~~~~~~~~
Congratulations to all of Andrew’s friends at Salesianum for winning the state soccer title on Monday night.  I think that’s 5 in a row!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not an hour goes by when I don’t think about my kids and Chris…Andrew, we miss you SO much.  Please make sure that you stay perched on Ali’s shoulder as her ‘Guardian Angel’.  I know you’re there.  You guys have ALWAYS been inseparable.  The neat thing was that you always depended so much on each other…and that doesn’t change now.

Live Like Andrew - please take a minute to show your loved ones how much they mean to you.

God bless you!

Unfortunately, I have to ask for your prayers yet again.  Tonight, I ask you to pray for the Eissler family.  Fred Eissler, an Archmere Academy graduate and 1st year midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, passed away last night from meningitis.  I did not have the honor to know this young man, but many here in our community knew him and a few people close to our Foundation were related to him.  It is such a tragic loss.  This is the second midshipman (along with Kristen Dickmann) to die this year from our area.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the Eissler, Lyons, and Crowley families.

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted since Monday.  On Tuesday morning, Chris and I paid our respects to Billy Beauchamp’s family.  The image of a little 2 year old in an open casket stays with you forever!  God bless Billy and his family.

~~~~~~~~~
The B+ Nation has always shown such great support and compassion for “our kids”…the kids that I introduce you to or who you meet some other way.  One of those great kids is Amanda Perrotta.  I regret to report that Amanda passed away on Wednesday.  If you have a minute, please post a nice message for her family.  I know it will mean a lot.  They sign their Journal Updates “B+” and “FROG” (Forever Relying on God).
Thanks to your generosity, OUR Foundation has provided assistance to many more families of critically ill children in the past few months including:
  • Jessica (AR) - 10 yr old with rhabdomyosarcoma
  • Brandon (PA) - 14 yr old with leukemia
  • Alyssa (NJ) - 4 yr old with kidney transplant and other conditions
  • Kyleigh (WA) - 2 yr old with numerous challenges
  • Carson (TX) - 6 mo old with tumor
  • Bradlee (TX) - 15 yr old with lymphoma
  • Trevayne (JAM) - 16 yr old with osteosarcoma
~~~~~~~~~~

One of the ways that we are able to accomplish so much is due to the generosity of kids.  I just love that ‘kids are helping kids’.  Our latest example comes from Laurel, MD where Shayna T. is doing various fundraising projects in preparation for her Bat Mitzvah.  Shayna is doing a different mitzvah (charity project) each month and she and her friends raised $150 in October for the B+ Foundation by selling baked goods.  Thanks so much, Shayna and friends!!!

 ~~~~~~~~~
Another example happened today at the University of Delaware where a group of freshmen, enrolled in a course called “First Year Experience”, ran a fundraiser for us in the Trabant Student Center.  We’ll be sure to post some pictures.  (And, no, Ali didn’t have anything to do with this.  I was really blown away when I got their e-mail asking for permission to do this.)
~~~~~~~~

I would like to thank two groups that invited me to speak to them this week.

  • Montgomery County (PA) Community College - thank you Dr. Steve Baron and class!
  • Delaware Association of Student Councils - thank you Stacy Heller and officers!

~~~~~~~~~
And, finally, here are a few dates to put on your calendar for next year - yes, we’re planning way ahead!  :)
Please keep the family of Billy Beauchamp in your prayers.  Billy’s family is the first family that we ever helped and, sadly, Billy passed away on Nov. 5th.
~~~~~~

Our Foundation is pleased to announce a partnership with DKMS Americas http://www.dkmsamericas.org/ to help build the rolls of bone marrow donors.  DKMS is an amazing organization that has had tremendous success in Europe and is quickly becoming a major force in the U.S. as well.  Please visit their site to read the inspiring story of their founding and learn about their latest activities.  At our future events, we will be registering bone marrow donors and DKMS will provide us with free test kits.  If you’re between 18-55 and in good health, there will be no reason not to get on the list.  And, yes, you could save a life!!!

~~~~~~
Lastly, our sincerest thanks to DYSA (www.dysa.org) and Hockessin Soccer Club (www.hockessinsoccerclub.org) for including us in their very successful “Kohl’s Cup” soccer tournament this weekend.  We sold quite a bit of “B+ Gear” and, along with the Kids Kickin Cancer organization (founded by teenagers Alicia & Brandon Lewandowski), we will be receiving a donation from the proceeds of the tournament.  Thank you all for your support!
Live Like Andrew - Make a difference!  If your heart stops today, are you happy with the way you have lived your life over the last 48 hours?  (Remember, Andrew went from 4 soccer games on Sat. to cardiac arrest on Monday.)
Tues. Nov. 4th - Election Day!
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
With the polls closed, the historic presidential election is finally over.
If you’re an Obama/Biden supporter, congratulations.  Celebrate and enjoy the moment, because in the morning, the work begins.  As the expression goes – “Put up or shut up” – well, it’s time to ‘put up’.
If you’re a McCain/Palin supporter, the disappointment will linger for a little while, but as John McCain said, you’ve got to “move on”.
If you didn’t even care about the election, well, I don’t know what’s going to motivate you… if this election didn’t.
We, as a country, have some serious problems.  And, like cancer research, I believe that the quickest way to solve these is through collaboration.  I pray that our political leaders will not define themselves by the “D” or “R” or “I” after their names but by an “A” – for American.
And, yes, for the sake of all the kids who have been diagnosed – and yet to be diagnosed – with cancer, I hope our leaders will place an emphasis on the health of our children.  Too many children are suffering and too many are dying!
~~~~~~

If you’re reading this on Election Night, there are parties going on all around the country.  Some are celebrating, some are crying.  For perspective though, let me tell you what some families are doing right now.

          Mom or Dad is sitting in a cold hospital room with one of those paper thin hospital-issued blankets wrapped around them.  The room has that unmistakable hospital smell to it.  S/he is sitting in her chair/bed.  For you, that chair would be an uncomfortable excuse for a bed.  For her, it’s the last thing she’s thinking about.  She’s just happy to have it.  She is watching her son in that industrial-type hospital bed; concentrating on watching his chest rise and fall with every breath.  So long as her baby’s chest goes up and down, they’re still in the battle.  There are constant interruptions from well-intentioned nurses, doctors, and therapists coming into the room.  Mom and son have absolutely no privacy.  There are constant noises from the various machines.  A NON-STOP variety of noises.  She knows those noises so well that when a certain alarm goes off, she jumps.  Her child is on a Q4 or Q6 schedule which determines how often he gets blood work.  If she ever thought she was nervous about getting test grades in school, it’s NOTHING compared to getting lab results.  At the risk of being a pain in the butt, she pesters the nurse to get the labs as soon as they’re back.  She scans the results at 100 mph knowing just what lines to focus on.  Is her son slipping or taking a baby step forward?  Unfortunately, critically ill kids tend to take baby steps in improvement, but can slide very fast in the wrong direction.  So, by looking at the labs, she knows whether a transfusion is coming or a unit of platelets or whether she can expect to see serious bleeding in the next few hours from the wound that they weren’t able to close.  Also, she’s thinking about tomorrow’s schedule – is it an MRI of her child’s brain, a CT of another part of the body, a bone marrow biopsy to check the meningitis, or a trip to Interventional Radiology for what is becoming a routine (but frustrating) re-positioning of a ND/NJ tube (feeding tube).  She watches the clock because in another 10 minutes, she needs to disturb her child to lift him up so that she and a nurse can re-position the pillows under him.  This will, hopefully, protect him from pressure sores.  She will do this every 2-3 hours, 24 hours a day.  And, she doesn’t mind – except that it’s painful to him.  She hasn’t eaten in many, many hours and she really doesn’t care.  She gets up every 15-20 minutes to check her son’s temperature because he’s been running a fever – for the last 4-6 WEEKS!  His head is soaking wet so she knows this round is ‘breaking’.  Time for the ice chips in the wash cloth that the therapist taught her.  All the hours of the day are pretty much the same since the fight goes on 24 hours a day.  But, she still feels a little better when the sun comes up, because she knows they’re in the battle for another day.

She turns on the television and sees that the outside world is both celebrating and crying over an election.

 And, you know what, this is only a fraction of the hell that this Mom, Dad, brother, sister, family are going through.  There are thousands of families right now in this position.

Why do I mention this?  Do I want you to feel guilty about celebrating/crying over an election?  Absolutely not!  You should feel passionately about it.  More people should.  I applaud ALL of the candidates, their families, and their volunteers for the enormous sacrifices that they have made in their pursuit to represent us.

BUT, PLEASE don’t ever forget the ‘others’…Those of us who ‘live’ (or have ‘lived’) in the hospitals.  Those poor kids who certainly didn’t do anything wrong, but are now battling these terrible, terrible diseases.  These little boys and girls are true American heroes!  May our elected leaders NEVER forget them.

God bless you and may God bless America!!!

It’s hard to believe it’s November already!  I hope everyone had a great and safe Halloween.

~~~~~~
Yesterday, Ali joined a couple of million of her closest friends and watched the Phillies parade down Broad Street in Philly.  Crazy experience, but I’m glad she did it.
~~~~~~~

If you live in NCCo, DE, don’t forget to watch “Youth in Sports” on Channel 28 on Tues. Nov. 4th.  I had the opportunity to bring a really neat kid along with me; Sydney Lysinger.  Sydney is a freshman at St. Mark’s HS and she is battling Hodgkins Disease.  My part is really boring but you’ve got to watch Sydney!!!   She did great.

P.S.  For those of you in Delaware, Grotto Pizza is hosting a fundraiser for the Diamond State Classic (DSC) high school girls basketball tournament.  If you click on the attached URL, you can print out a voucher that you will present to your server on Mon. Nov. 3rd.  The DSC will get a donation equal to 20% of your bill.  Why is this important to the B+ Foundation?  As some of you may know, the DSC has generously selected our Foundation as one of their beneficiaries of their great tournament.  For more information, please check out these links.
